I have been scrutinizing resumes that we have received from the SMTG Job page in Facebook. All most all of the resumes are pathetic-not that I am questioning lack of experience or poor academics or lack of a match-but my simple point is-they don't know how to write a CV.
I have screened and interviewed a lot of Engineering graduates in USA in my capacity as R&D manager and scientists in my last ten years of corporate life in USA. All I can say-when I screen a resume-hundreds of them-most of us use a very simple strategy.
First, we scan whether the resume has the background that has been asked for. If we are asking for an Oracle application developer, we would quickly scan what he has done in that field.
So rule no 1 of CV writing:
First understand the job requirements in details and have an introduction of your resume at the top of CV-that introduction must speak about why you are fit for that requirement. If you do not have it on top or at all, you are wasting your time.
Nobody has time to read your academics, past experience, unless, the reviewers feel, you have a good match and thus, it is worthwhile to read your resume.
I repeat, not a single recruiter has time to read your complete resume unless he or she is convinced your resume is a match.
Rule no 2 of CV writing:
Job experience, starting from the latest should appear after introduction. Latest job experience must closely follow the job posting requirements.
Academics should come last. In job market, your academic qualification will be considered only after the recruiter would find a match.
So please rewrite your resume for every job posting so that to a recruiter it becomes obvious why you are a good fit.
